Interview Questions and Answers for Associate Data Analyst – Optum (UHG)

1. Tell me about yourself.

Answer:
I have completed my [Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering] from [Your College Name]. I am passionate about working with data and solving real-world problems. I have basic experience with SQL and data analysis, and I enjoy writing queries and finding insights from large datasets. I am also a quick learner and interested in improving processes through automation and analysis. I’m now looking forward to starting my career in a company like Optum where I can grow and contribute to meaningful projects.

2. What do you understand by the role of a Data Analyst?

Answer:
A Data Analyst collects, processes, and analyzes data to help businesses make better decisions. In this role at Optum, it means writing SQL queries to get the required data, monitoring data feeds, creating reports, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring the data is accurate and delivered on time. It also includes understanding the business needs and providing data-based solutions.

3. What experience do you have with SQL or databases?

Answer:
I have basic experience using SQL for writing queries to extract, filter, and sort data from databases. I know how to use SELECT statements, JOINs, WHERE clauses, GROUP BY, and ORDER BY. I have also practiced writing queries for small projects during college and in personal practice. I’m comfortable with databases like MySQL or Oracle and am confident in learning any tools required on the job.

4. Can you explain a JOIN in SQL and why it is used?

Answer:
A JOIN in SQL is used to combine rows from two or more tables based on a related column. For example, if one table has customer details and another has orders, we can use a JOIN to see which customer placed which order. There are different types of joins like INNER JOIN, LEFT JOIN, RIGHT JOIN, and FULL JOIN, depending on what kind of results we want to include from each table.

5. What would you do if a data feed is delayed or failed?

Answer:
First, I would check the source of the feed and any logs or alerts to find the cause of the delay or failure. If I can’t resolve it immediately, I would notify the concerned teams or stakeholders about the delay. I would also try to find a temporary workaround if possible. Once fixed, I’d confirm that the data is correctly received and document the issue and solution to avoid future problems.

6. Have you ever worked on any data-related project? If yes, explain.

Answer:
Yes, during my college [or internship/personal] project, I worked on a data analysis project where I collected data from different sources, cleaned it, and wrote SQL queries to generate reports. For example, I analyzed student performance data to find trends and prepared dashboards using Excel. This helped me understand the importance of clean data, query optimization, and presenting useful insights.

 7. How do you handle errors or bugs when writing queries?

Answer:
If I get an error, I first read the error message carefully to understand what’s wrong. Then I check the query line by line – the table names, column names, and syntax. I also test smaller parts of the query to isolate the problem. If I still can’t fix it, I look for documentation or ask a team member for help. I always make sure to learn from the error so I don’t repeat it next time.

8. Why do you want to work at Optum/UnitedHealth Group?

Answer:
I want to work at Optum because it’s a global leader in healthcare technology. The work here makes a real difference in people’s lives, and I want to be part of that. The company offers a great learning environment and works on big data problems, which matches my interest in working with large datasets and improving systems. I also appreciate that Optum promotes diversity, innovation, and growth.

9. Do you have knowledge of cloud platforms like AWS?

Answer:
I have basic knowledge of AWS and cloud computing concepts. I understand how cloud platforms store and process large volumes of data. I’m familiar with services like S3, EC2, and Lambda from learning through online tutorials. I’m eager to deepen my knowledge and apply it in real projects, especially since cloud is becoming essential in data analytics.

10. How do you manage multiple tasks and priorities?

Answer:
I plan my day by listing all tasks and setting priorities based on deadlines and importance. I use tools like checklists or calendars to stay organized. If I face multiple urgent tasks, I try to complete the high-impact ones first and communicate with my team to set realistic expectations. I always try to stay focused and avoid distractions to make sure all work is done with quality.
