Interview Questions and Answers for Developer Role at Standard Chartered

Q1. Can you explain your understanding of backend development?
Backend development is the part of software that runs behind the scenes and supports how applications work. It includes creating servers, writing APIs, and connecting to databases. While the frontend is what users see on the screen, the backend makes sure that data is processed and delivered correctly. For example, when a user logs into a banking app, the backend checks the user’s details in the database and allows access. A backend developer ensures that the system is reliable, secure, and fast.

Q2. Why do you want to work at Standard Chartered as a Developer?
I want to work at Standard Chartered because it is a leading international bank with a strong focus on innovation, diversity, and growth. The role offers the chance to work with modern technologies like Java Spring Boot, APIs, and GraphQL, which are important in the financial industry. Standard Chartered provides an inclusive environment, continuous learning opportunities, and the chance to contribute to meaningful projects that impact millions of clients. Joining this company would allow me to build my technical skills while working in a professional and global environment.

Q3. What do you know about Java Spring Boot and why is it useful?
Java Spring Boot is a framework used to build backend applications quickly and efficiently. It makes it easier to create applications without writing too much configuration code. For example, in a banking system, Spring Boot can help create APIs for checking account balances, making transactions, or managing customer details. It is popular because it supports scalability, security, and integration with other tools. As a developer, using Spring Boot helps deliver reliable solutions faster.

Q4. Can you explain what an API is and why it is important?
API stands for Application Programming Interface. It allows two software systems to talk to each other. For example, when you use a mobile app to transfer money, the app communicates with the bank’s backend systems through APIs. REST APIs are very common because they are easy to use and flexible. APIs are important because they connect applications, share data safely, and make services reusable. In this role, building and maintaining APIs will be a key responsibility.

Q5. What is GraphQL and how is it different from REST API?
GraphQL is a modern way of building APIs where the client can request exactly the data it needs. Unlike REST, which usually sends fixed sets of data, GraphQL allows more flexibility and reduces unnecessary data transfer. For example, in a banking app, instead of calling multiple APIs to get account balance and customer details, GraphQL can fetch both in a single request. This makes systems faster and more efficient. Knowing GraphQL is helpful for creating advanced backend solutions.

Q6. How do you ensure quality in your code?
To ensure quality, I always follow coding standards and best practices. I write clean and reusable code so that it can be easily understood by others. Unit testing is very important, as it checks whether each part of the code works correctly. I also review my code regularly to find and fix mistakes early. Working in a team means I also learn from peer code reviews. By doing this, I can make sure the application is stable, secure, and reliable.

Q7. How do you handle defects or issues in your application?
Whenever a defect is found, the first step is to analyze the root cause. I try to understand whether it is a coding mistake, a design issue, or a problem with integration. Then I fix the defect carefully and test the solution to ensure it does not affect other parts of the application. It is also important to document the issue and share the learning with the team so that similar problems can be avoided in the future. Handling defects proactively ensures that the application remains stable and trustworthy.

Q8. Can you explain your understanding of databases, specifically Oracle?
Databases are used to store and manage data so that applications can use it when needed. Oracle is a widely used relational database that supports large amounts of secure and structured data. For example, in a banking system, Oracle may store account details, customer information, and transaction history. As a developer, I need to write queries to insert, update, and retrieve data. Understanding Oracle helps in building applications that are fast, secure, and efficient.

Q9. How do you work effectively in a team environment?
Working in a team requires good communication, cooperation, and responsibility. I believe in sharing ideas during planning sessions and listening to others’ viewpoints. If I face challenges, I discuss them with my teammates instead of working alone. I also respect deadlines and ensure my tasks are completed on time to support the team’s goals. Mentoring junior members and learning from seniors helps in building a positive and productive team environment.

Q10. Where do you see yourself in the next three years?
In the next three years, I want to grow into a skilled backend developer who can handle complex projects independently. I aim to gain expertise in areas like microservices, cloud technologies, and advanced database management. I also want to contribute to improving processes, mentoring new members, and playing a bigger role in the team’s success. Working at Standard Chartered will give me the right exposure to international banking projects and help me build a strong career path.
